A mate gave me a job installing carpet on commercial high-rise sites in Sydney. Long days, hard travel, no shortcuts. But I had my foot in the door, and I was finally learning a trade.

I'd go home and study what I'd seen that day. YouTube. Manufacturer specs. Trade forums. I'd take offcuts of carpet home and keep them in a container, comparing how different products behaved over time. That obsession is what got me ahead.

From carpet I moved into vinyl composition tile (VCT), vinyl plank, sheet vinyl, then spent the next seven years going deep on hard floors - laminate, hybrid, engineered timber, herringbone, sub-floor work. The more I learned about install, the more I realised it all comes back to prep. Get the substrate wrong and the best product in the world fails inside a year.
